For ten years, Catbird Press has been publishing new translations and expanded editions of the major works of Karel Čapek (1890-1938), who is generally considered the greatest Czech author of the first half of the 20th century. But this volume is the first to contain a work that has never before appeared in English i any form: Wayside Crosses, the first of two story collections. It consits of metaphysical tales, searching stories about searches. Some are detective stories that do not follow the rules and do not have solutions, that are about a different sort of detection. Others are about apparent, minor miracles that have no explanations. The second collection, Painful Tales, consists of more realistic stories about characters who are forced to make choices in which one good conflicts with another.
